Implants should not deter women from annual mammograms

UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Breast Imaging Program uses a variety of imaging examinations to diagnose a patient's condition. These examinations include:

  • Digital mammography
Screening: For women without symptoms of breast cancer.
Diagnostic: For women and men with symptoms including breast pain, breast lump or nipple discharge.

  • High-resolution breast ultrasound
Diagnostic: For women to evaluate a breast lump or an abnormal finding on another imaging examination.
Screening: Research is under way at the center to determine if screening breast ultrasound is useful for high-risk women.

  • Breast MRI
Screening: Useful in conjunction with mammography in asymptomatic women at high risk for developing breast cancer.
Diagnostic: Useful to determine the extent of disease in women with breast and screening the opposite breast, assessing the response to   chemotherapy, detecting local recurrence after breast conservation, assessing a high suspicion area when other exams are inconclusive and evaluating breast implants.

  • Minimally invasive image guided needle biopsy
When a suspicious abnormality is found, this technique is used to obtain a definite diagnosis. It is performed with local anesthesia and generally the biopsy only takes a few minutes. The results are usually available in two business days.

  • Mobile mammography screening services
The center contracts with groups to provide screening mammography services at convenient locations in the community, including work sites, health fairs and churches. For more information, call 214-645-2560.
